Recently I was pushed to a situation by my employer which forced me to start fresh round of intensive job hunt. Even though the reasons for this situation is invalid for this post I would like to share my experiences in job market. This might be usefull for all those people who have good experience but are unable to find a job.
Analyzing the situation
I have been working in IT industry since 1998 in various roles and capacities. But when I entered job market afresh. I could see no one is any more interested in my resume I am no more getting calls as earlier. Which left me thinking if the job market saturated, is economy playing a havoc. Well the answer is no you still have your place. The market is flooded with unrealistic resumes created mainly by resume writers and hr consulting firms. Well i just mean to say a minority of bad guys making things complicated for all, basically all are good people. The loosers are your company and client, filthy managers are clear winners as they bag away most of $$, all others time will prove. We have gone enough estray comming back to the point. So mostly you are in a market that is clouted with dubious entities who uses their full strenght and their consulting firm's strenght to prove they are real. In this tug of war between orginal and a group of villains you have to prove your worth. First step is your resume..First step your resume
Any idea what all goes into your resume,ok here it is,
- Your experience
- Your strenght
- Your skill sets
- And above all the targeted market.
First 3 you are aware so how does market gets into your resume. The market gets into your resume through the first 3 points. For that first you have to analyse the market. For that you can talk to your colleagues and friends who recently joined a new job And most importantly go to your favourite job search engine see, targeted jobs see wht they are looking for. Look at what are the technical skills and functional skills and how are they phrasing their requirements. Try to understand their requirement, align your resume with their expectations. I said align not fabricate, there is a huge difference between align and fabricate.
Align means changing weights and priorities, how to do that? Say you have 70% management and 30 % technical role and recruiter having vacancies for 50% technical and 50% management role, go ahead and align your resume for what they are looking for. Read requirements again dont you see you havent mentioned a handfull of recruiter's priorities in your resume that you have been always doing, go ahead and add those. Now look down what all things you have been doing in which project, are the summary aligned with your project, do the necessary corrections. Dont you see it is already looking much better. Update your total experience, add newly acquired certifications, correct font, font size and indentation. Last but not least make sure all your contact and personal details are up to date.
Yes you are all geared up to apply for your favourite post.
Best of luck
